Why Did Jesus Call Himself the Son of Man?

Have you ever wondered why Jesus so often referred to Himself as the Son of Man? Of all the titles He could have chosen—Messiah, Son of David, Son of God—He most frequently called Himself the Son of Man. To understand why, we must journey into the depths of ancient Scripture, not just within the pages of the Bible, but also in the apocryphal text known as The Book of Enoch.

The Book of Enoch: A Mysterious and Ancient Text

The Book of Enoch is an ancient Jewish writing, attributed to Enoch, the great-grandfather of Noah. Though it is not included in the canon of most Christian Bibles, it was widely known in Jewish thought during the time of Jesus. The book expands on themes found in Genesis 6, detailing the fallen Watchers, their rebellion, and God’s coming judgment. It also contains vivid descriptions of the Messiah, whom it refers to as the Son of Man.

One of the most striking passages comes from 1 Enoch 46:1-4, which describes a vision of heaven where Enoch sees a figure of divine glory:

“And there I saw One who had a head of days, and His head was white like wool; and with Him was another being whose countenance had the appearance of a man, and His face was full of graciousness, like one of the holy angels. And I asked the angel who went with me and showed me all the hidden things, concerning that Son of Man, who He was, and whence He was, and why He went with the Head of Days. And he answered and said unto me: This is the Son of Man who hath righteousness, with whom dwelleth righteousness, and who revealeth all the treasures of that which is hidden, because the Lord of Spirits hath chosen Him, and whose lot hath the preeminence before the Lord of Spirits in uprightness forever.”

This passage describes the Son of Man as a pre-existent, heavenly figure, chosen by God, and possessing divine authority. He is more than a mere mortal; He is righteous, glorious, and a revealer of divine mysteries.

Jesus and the Son of Man Title

The significance of Jesus calling Himself the Son of Man becomes clear when we consider the Jewish expectations of the time. When Jesus used this title, He was not simply speaking of His humanity. He was aligning Himself with the heavenly figure in 1 Enoch, the preordained ruler of righteousness who would judge the nations. This is why, in Matthew 26:64, when Jesus tells the high priest:

“From now on you will see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of Power and coming on the clouds of heaven.”

He was making a direct reference to His divine identity. The priest immediately understood the weight of this statement, accusing Jesus of blasphemy because He was equating Himself with the divine figure described in Daniel and 1 Enoch.

Other References to the Son of Man

Beyond The Book of Enoch, the title Son of Man appears prominently in the Old Testament, particularly in the book of Daniel.

Daniel 7:13-14 states:

“I saw in the night visions, and behold, with the clouds of heaven there came one like a Son of Man, and he came to the Ancient of Days and was presented before him. And to him was given dominion and glory and a kingdom, that all peoples, nations, and languages should serve him; his dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and his kingdom one that shall not be destroyed.”

This passage directly correlates to Jesus' own words when speaking of His return in power and glory. He was revealing Himself as the Son of Man from Daniel’s prophecy—the divine ruler who would be given authority over all nations.

Why This Matters

By calling Himself the Son of Man, Jesus was affirming that He was the fulfillment of these ancient prophecies. He was both fully human and fully divine—the righteous one chosen by God to reign and to bring justice. Those who recognized the references from Enoch and Daniel would have understood that Jesus was not merely calling Himself a man, but rather, the very Son of Man whom God had promised would one day rule in glory.

The Sanhedrin understood exactly what Jesus was claiming when He called Himself the Son of Man. To them, it was not just a title—it was a direct challenge to their authority and a claim to divinity that they could not tolerate.

When Jesus stood before the high priest Caiaphas during His trial, the council sought any reason to condemn Him. Finally, Caiaphas demanded, “Tell us if you are the Christ, the Son of God.” (Matthew 26:63). Jesus’ response sealed His fate:

“You have said so. But I tell you, from now on you will see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of Power and coming on the clouds of heaven.” (Matthew 26:64)

The room erupted in outrage. Caiaphas tore his robes, declaring, “He has uttered blasphemy! What further witnesses do we need?” (Matthew 26:65). They understood that Jesus was identifying Himself as the Son of Man from Daniel’s vision—the divine ruler, the one who would stand in judgment over them. To the Sanhedrin, this was intolerable.

It was not simply that Jesus performed miracles or gathered followers; it was that He dared to claim divine authority. By calling Himself the Son of Man, Jesus made it clear that He was not just a prophet—He was the one whom God had appointed to reign over all creation. And for that, the religious leaders determined that He must die.

So the next time you read the words of Jesus calling Himself the Son of Man, remember: He was revealing the mystery hidden in ages past—the eternal, divine King who came not just to rule, but to redeem.

The Book of Enoch: Its History, Canonical Debate, and Relevance in the Sons of God Series

The Book of Enoch (download here) is one of the most profound and mysterious ancient Jewish texts, offering a detailed account of the fallen Watchers, the Nephilim, divine judgment, and the supernatural conflict between good and evil. It expands upon Genesis 6:1-4, describing how the Sons of God (בְּנֵי־הָאֱלֹהִים) descended to Earth, took human wives, and fathered the Nephilim, a race of giants whose wickedness corrupted humanity and led to the Great Flood.

While the Book of Enoch was highly regarded in Second Temple Judaism (516 BC – AD 70) and was widely read by early Christians, it was later excluded from both Jewish and Christian canons. However, its direct citation in the New Testament (Jude 1:14-15) and its theological connections to biblical prophecy demonstrate its immense influence on Scripture.

This is why I have chosen to incorporate themes from the Book of Enoch into my Sons of God series. The book provides a rich foundation for exploring the cosmic war between divine and fallen beings, the corruption of humanity by supernatural forces, and the ultimate redemption through divine justice.

Historical Background of the Book of Enoch

The Book of Enoch was written between the 3rd century BC and the 1st century AD, likely as a collection of multiple texts over time. Originally composed in Aramaic and Hebrew, it was widely circulated among Jewish sects, particularly the Essenes at Qumran, who preserved fragments of it in the Dead Sea Scrolls.

The book is divided into five key sections:

  1. The Book of the Watchers (Chapters 1–36) – Describes the fallen angels (Watchers), their descent to Earth, their corruption of humanity, and their punishment.
  2. The Book of Parables (Chapters 37–71) – Introduces the Son of Man, a messianic figure later echoed in the Book of Daniel and the teachings of Jesus.
  3. The Astronomical Book (Chapters 72–82) – Details celestial and cosmic mysteries.
  4. The Book of Dream Visions (Chapters 83–90) – Prophetic visions concerning world history and the final judgment.
  5. The Epistle of Enoch (Chapters 91–108) – Enoch’s final warnings of judgment and hope for the righteous.

These themes align closely with both Old and New Testament prophecies, making the Book of Enoch a key source for understanding the biblical narrative of spiritual warfare and divine justice—central themes in my Sons of God series.

Did Jesus Read the Book of Enoch?

There is strong historical and textual evidence that Jesus was familiar with the Book of Enoch and likely read from it:

1. The Book of Enoch Was Widely Circulated in Jesus’ Time

  • The Dead Sea Scrolls, discovered at Qumran, contain multiple copies of Enoch, proving that the book was actively read and preserved by Jewish religious communities.
  • The Essenes, a prominent Jewish sect of Jesus’ time, considered Enoch to be authoritative Scripture.
  • If Enoch was widely known among the Jews, then Jesus, as a Jewish teacher and rabbi, would have been familiar with it.

2. Jesus’ Teachings Contain Enochian Themes

Many of Jesus’ parables, descriptions of the end times, and references to the "Son of Man" closely parallel the Book of Enoch:

  • The Title “Son of Man”

    • The Book of Enoch (1 Enoch 46:1-2) introduces the Son of Man as a divine, messianic judge.
    • Jesus refers to Himself as the Son of Man over 80 times in the Gospels (e.g., Matthew 24:30, Mark 14:62, Luke 12:8, John 3:13).
    • This title does not appear explicitly in the Old Testament, suggesting that Jesus was drawing from Enoch’s description of the Messiah.
  • The Parable of the Sheep and the Goats (Matthew 25:31-46)

    • In 1 Enoch 90:20-27, the Son of Man judges the nations, separating the righteous from the wicked—a direct parallel to Jesus’ teaching in Matthew 25.
  • The Description of Hell and Eternal Judgment

    • Jesus speaks of “outer darkness” and “weeping and gnashing of teeth” (Matthew 8:12, Matthew 13:42), a concept not found in the Old Testament but detailed in Enoch.
  • Angelic Rebellion and the Watchers’ Judgment

    • Enoch describes angels who sinned by interbreeding with humans and were cast into the abyss.
    • Jesus references fallen angels bound in chains (Matthew 25:41, Luke 8:31) and Peter and Jude reiterate this in 2 Peter 2:4 and Jude 1:6.

Given these strong connections, it is highly likely that Jesus was familiar with and referenced the Book of Enoch in His teachings.

Citations in Canonical Texts and Arguments for Inclusion

1. Direct Citation in the New Testament

  • Jude 1:14-15 directly quotes 1 Enoch 1:9:

“Enoch, the seventh from Adam, prophesied: ‘Behold, the Lord is coming with thousands upon thousands of His holy ones to execute judgment upon all.’”

  • This indicates that at least one New Testament writer considered Enoch an authoritative source of prophecy.

2. Influence on Biblical Prophecy

  • Daniel, Revelation, and the Gospels all contain Enochian themes, from the Messiah’s role as divine judge to angelic rebellion and the fate of the wicked.

Why I Am Using the Book of Enoch in the Sons of GodSeries

The Sons of God series draws heavily from the Book of Enoch because it provides a coherent, ancient foundation for biblical spiritual warfare and divine justice. Specifically, I incorporate it to:

  1. Restore the Supernatural Context of Genesis 6

    • The modern church often downplays the supernatural aspects of the Nephilim, the Watchers, and their role in corrupting humanity.
    • The Book of Enoch expands upon this biblical narrative, providing a deeper understanding of the Great Flood, divine judgment, and the war between light and darkness.
  2. Introduce the Watchers and Their Role in Humanity’s Corruption

    • The Watchers in Enoch are fallen celestial beings who taught forbidden knowledge to humanity.
    • In my series, these fallen beings parallel the Scryl, who manipulate and deceive through advanced technology and forbidden wisdom.
  3. Bridge Ancient Prophecy with Hard Science Fiction

    • My universe fuses biblical prophecy with advanced technology, creating a theologically rich yet scientifically plausible setting.
  4. Reclaim Lost Christian Theology

    • The Book of Enoch was widely read by early Christians, and its themes resonate deeply with the message of Scripture.
    • Integrating its elements enhances the depth and authenticity of my storytelling.

Conclusion: Should the Book of Enoch Be Considered Canon?

Arguments for Inclusion:

  • Jesus’ teachings strongly align with Enochian themes.
  • Jude 1:14-15 directly quotes the book.
  • Early Christians widely read and accepted it.
  • Theological consistency with biblical prophecy.

Arguments for Exclusion:

  • Rejected by Rabbinic Judaism to downplay angelic rebellion.
  • Omitted by Church councils in favor of texts with apostolic authorship.
  • Associated with sectarian Jewish groups (Essenes).

Regardless of its canonical status, the Book of Enoch remains essential for understanding biblical history, angelology, and the battle between good and evil—a perfect foundation for the Sons of God series.

Building the World of Sons of God – The Eternal Watchers

Merging Biblical Truth, Historical Events, and Speculative Christian Fiction

When I set out to create Sons of God – The Eternal Watchers, my goal was more than just storytelling. I wanted to craft a universe deeply rooted in Christian principles, drawing from biblical history, prophecy, and theology, while also embracing the imaginative possibilities of speculative fiction. The result is a world that intertwines divine truth with creative storytelling, offering a theologically rich yet thrilling narrative that explores the cosmic battle between light and darkness.

The Foundation: Biblical and Historical Roots

At the core of my worldbuilding lies Scripture and historical events, both of which serve as anchors for the speculative elements of the story. Rather than creating an entirely fictional theology or mythology, I chose to build upon real biblical accounts and expand them into a narrative that remains faithful to Christian doctrine while exploring the unseen supernatural realm.

The Watchers and the Angelic War

My universe takes inspiration from Daniel 4:13,17 (NASB), which speaks of the Watchers, and from the Book of Enoch, which expands on their role. These beings are not merely passive observers but active participants in the cosmic struggle, influencing human history in profound ways.

  • The Rebellion of the Watchers – Genesis 6:1-4 (NASB) provides the foundation for the story of the 200 rebellious Watchers who descended to Earth, took human wives, and gave birth to the Nephilim. In my speculative take, this rebellion had far-reaching consequences that continue into the present and future, setting the stage for the battle between the Sons of God and the Fallen.

  • The Influence of the Fallen on Human Civilization – Throughout history, empires have risen and fallen, and behind the scenes, unseen forces have waged war. In Sons of God, the Fallen Watchers manipulate events, working through rulers, governments, and secret societies to shape civilization. Figures like Lilith, who serves as an instrument of power behind world governments, exemplify how demonic forces influence earthly affairs (Ephesians 6:12).

  • The Coming of the Anti-Christ and a One-World System – Revelation 13 (NASB) speaks of the Beast controlling world commerce, governance, and spiritual deception. In my world, these prophetic warnings manifest through the rise of PaxToken and BeastNet, a digital economic system designed to enslave humanity under the guise of utopia.

The Book of Enoch: Lost Knowledge and an Ancient Christian Tradition

A significant influence on Sons of God – The Eternal Watchers is the Book of Enoch, an ancient Jewish text widely read during the Second Temple period and preserved in the canon of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church, the oldest continuous Christian community outside the Holy Land.

The Ethiopian Christian Community and the Book of Enoch

The Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church, which traces its origins to the Ethiopian eunuch’s conversion in Acts 8:26-40 (NASB), has preserved the Book of Enoch as part of its scriptural canon. Unlike Western Christianity, which largely removed Enoch from its biblical corpus, the Ethiopian Church has maintained it as an inspired and authoritative text.

How Enoch Shapes the Lore of Sons of God

  • The Watchers and Their Rebellion – 1 Enoch 6-16 details the fall of 200 Watchers, led by Samyaza, who corrupted humanity. This text directly inspired the backstory of the Fallen Watchers in my universe, shaping their motivations and their catastrophic impact on early human civilization.

  • The Judgment of the Watchers – Enoch states that the rebellious Watchers were imprisoned in the abyss until the final judgment. This aligns with Jude 1:6 (NASB):
“And angels who did not keep their own domain but abandoned their proper dwelling place, these He has kept in eternal restraints under darkness for the judgment of the great day.”
In Sons of God, these fallen beings continue to influence the world through their earthly agents while awaiting their final release.

  • The Nephilim and Their Legacy – 1 Enoch 7 describes the Nephilim, hybrid offspring of the Watchers, as giants who became a plague upon the earth. This expands on Genesis 6:4 (NASB):
“The Nephilim were on the earth in those days, and also afterward, when the sons of God came in to the daughters of mankind, and they bore children to them.”
In my speculative expansion, remnants of their influence persist, as secret bloodlines and organizations seek to restore the dominion of the Fallen.

Tartarus: A Realm Beyond Our Plane of Existence

While much of my world operates within physical space, Tartarus exists outside our observable universe, accessible only through specific space-time coordinates. This concept is drawn from 2 Peter 2:4 (NASB):
"For if God did not spare angels when they sinned, but cast them into hell and committed them to pits of darkness, held for judgment;"

Here, the word translated as hell is Tartarus, a distinct realm from Sheol or Gehenna. It is described as a prison for the most wicked of fallen beings, an extra-dimensional abyss where the rebellious Watchers are bound.

  • Tartarus is Not of This World – Unlike hell as commonly understood, Tartarus is outside our plane of existence. In my world, it can only be accessed through very specific space-time coordinates, hidden beyond normal perception.

  • The Imprisoned Watchers Await Release – Revelation 9:1-2 (NASB) speaks of a time when a fallen star (Satan) will open the abyss, releasing bound spirits. This event aligns with the final conflict in Sons of God, where the Fallen Watchers seek their liberation.

Speculative Christian Fiction: Faith Meets Imagination

Unlike traditional science fiction or fantasy, my approach does not create a new belief system but expands on biblical truth through a speculative lens.

  • Station Orion and Cloaking Technology – Unlike Tartarus, Station Orion exists within real space but is cloaked, using advanced Guardian technology. This maintains biblical consistency while integrating futuristic elements.

  • Technology and the Supernatural – Sons of God blends divine power with technology, reflecting the biblical principle that God’s wisdom is beyond human understanding (Isaiah 55:9).

  • The Role of Free Will in Cosmic Conflict – Humanity is not passive in this war. Ephesians 6:12 (NASB) reminds us:
“For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places.”

Christian Principles as the Narrative Core

At the heart of Sons of God is a commitment to biblical truth.

  • Good and Evil Are Not Ambiguous – Unlike secular fiction, Sons of God affirms good and evil as real forces.
  • The Victory of the Creator Is Certain – Revelation 19:11-16 (NASB) assures us of Christ’s ultimate triumph.
  • Redemption and Transformation – Romans 8:1 (NASB) declares:
  • “Therefore there is now no condemnation at all for those who are in Christ Jesus.”

The Lost Civilizations: A Speculative Exploration

The following is purely speculative fiction, inspired by biblical themes, historical mysteries, and theological possibilities. It is not canon, nor does it represent established Christian doctrine. Instead, it serves as a creative exploration of what might have been, using speculative Christian fiction as a lens to imagine how God could have preserved uncorrupted civilizations before the Great Flood.

The Great Departure: Civilizations That Vanished Before the Flood

The Great Flood, described in Genesis 6-9, was a divine act of judgment upon a world corrupted by the Fallen Watchers and their offspring, the Nephilim. According to Scripture, humanity had descended into violence and depravity (Genesis 6:11-12, NASB):

"Now the earth was corrupt in the sight of God, and the earth was filled with violence. And God looked on the earth, and behold, it was corrupt; for humanity had corrupted its way upon the earth."

While the majority of mankind had fallen into wickedness, could there have been righteous civilizations that resisted corruption? And if so, could some of them have escaped the coming destruction with the help of the loyal Watchers?

Ancient history is filled with accounts of mysterious civilizations that flourished, only to vanish without explanation. In this speculative narrative, some of these civilizations did not perish, but instead left Earth before the Flood, guided by divine intervention to new homes among the stars.

Atlantis: The Civilization That Departed

The legend of Atlantis, first recorded by the Greek philosopher Plato, tells of a great and advanced civilization that was lost in a single day and night. Many have speculated on its location, but what if Atlantis was not destroyed—but instead left Earth altogether?

  • In this speculative interpretation, Atlantis was one of the last righteous civilizations, resisting the corruption of the Nephilim and the Fallen Watchers.
  • As the world spiraled into chaos, faithful Watchers guided the Atlanteans away, ensuring their survival before the floodwaters consumed the earth.
  • Rather than sinking beneath the ocean, Atlantis relocated—its people departing for a distant world where they could continue their civilization free from the influence of evil.
Avalon – The New Home of Atlantis
  • Avalon became a stronghold of knowledge and faith, a place where the Creator’s design for humanity could flourish.
  • The descendants of Atlantis became the Guardians, sworn to protect humanity and ensure that the mistakes of the past were never repeated.
  • The Watchers who guided them remained as mentors and protectors, ensuring that Avalon would stand as a fortress against the Fallen’s influence.

Their destination? A new home among the stars—Avalon.

The Atlanteans, led by loyal Watchers, found refuge on Avalon, a planet where they could live in righteousness without fear of corruption.

Far from forgotten, the Guardians of Avalon continue to watch over Earth, preparing for the day when they must intervene once more.

Other Lost Civilizations That May Have Escaped

Atlantis is not the only civilization that appears to have disappeared without a trace. Across the world, ancient cultures with knowledge far beyond their time left behind ruins, artifacts, and mysteries that suggest they may have also departed before the Flood.

The Nazca – A Civilization That Left Signs in the Desert

Deep in the Peruvian desert, the Nazca Lines remain one of the greatest archaeological enigmas. Massive geoglyphs, only visible from the air, stretch across the landscape, depicting animals, humanoid figures, and geometric patterns.

Could the Nazca civilization have been among those who departed Earth?

  • Their intricate designs, visible only from the sky, could have been messages or landing markers, guiding celestial vessels.
  • Their disappearance from history could indicate that they were led away, rather than destroyed, escaping before the Flood.
  • Like Atlantis, they may have found refuge in the stars, preserving their knowledge and culture far beyond Earth.

The Indus Valley Civilization – The Forgotten Kingdom

One of the world’s oldest civilizations, the Indus Valley Civilization (modern-day India and Pakistan) mysteriously collapsed around 2100 BC, with its cities abandoned and its people vanishing from history.

  • Unlike other civilizations of the ancient world, the Indus people had advanced knowledge of urban planning, irrigation, and engineering, suggesting wisdom beyond their time.
  • No signs of war or destruction have been found—could they have simply left?
  • In this speculative narrative, the faithful among them may have been guided away before the Flood, taking their knowledge with them to a new home beyond Earth.

Did They Have Flight Technology?

The descriptions of Vimanas in ancient texts include details that seem eerily similar to advanced aircraft or spacecraft. Could these be historical accounts of real pre-Flood technology, passed down and mythologized over time?

  • Some texts describe Vimanas as chariots with wings, capable of flying at great speeds, emitting beams of light, and moving between worlds.
  • Like Atlantis, the Indus people may have fled Earth, using knowledge far beyond what was known to the rest of the world.

The Kingdom of Kush – Africa’s Lost Civilization

The Kingdom of Kush, a great African civilization, rivaled the power of Egypt but mysteriously declined. Some ancient texts speak of a golden land to the south, where a righteous people once lived but vanished without a trace.

  • The Kushites were known for their wisdom, strength, and deep spiritual traditions.
  • Could they have been among those led away before the world fell into ruin?
  • If so, their legacy may live on beyond the stars, waiting for the time when they might return.

Where Did They Go?

The civilizations that departed before the Flood did not simply vanish; they found refuge on new worlds. Each of these planets became a new home, free from the corruption of the Fallen:

  • Elysium IV – A paradise world where wisdom and learning were preserved, ensuring that the knowledge of God’s creation would not be lost.
  • Nova Terra – A thriving center of faith and culture, where righteous rulers ensured that justice and order reflected divine law.
  • Serenity Alpha – A world of contemplation and spiritual discipline, where the faithful could seek deeper communion with the Creator, far removed from the conflicts of the galaxy.

These civilizations did not simply disappear—they were preserved, waiting for the day when they would be called upon again in the war between good and evil.

The Flood Was Not the End—It Was a New Beginning

The Flood was not merely a punishment; it was a reset—a chance for humanity to begin anew, cleansed of the corruption of the Fallen. While Noah and his descendants carried on the human race on Earth, those who left before the waters came continued their journey in the stars.

Their survival was not through their own power, but through the mercy of the Creator and the guidance of the faithful Watchers who remained true to their mission. These civilizations stand as a reminder that righteousness is never truly wiped out—that even in the darkest of times, the Most High preserves a remnant who will carry on His truth.

Though hidden, these lost civilizations have not forgotten Earth. And in the unfolding war between the Sons of Godand the Fallen, they will return when they are needed most.

Again, this is purely speculative fiction and not established doctrine, but rather a creative exploration of possibilities within a biblical and historical framework.

A Universe Built on Truth, Expanded by Imagination

Through faith, history, and imagination, I have built a universe that remains true to Christian principles while embracing speculative fiction.

The war is not over, but the victory belongs to the Most High.

Who Are the Watchers? Eternal Guardians and the Fallen Few

The Watchers are among the most mysterious and powerful beings in divine history—angels created with both eternal and corporeal bodies. Unlike purely spiritual entities, they exist in both the heavenly and physical realms, able to take human or angelic form as needed. Tasked with observing and guiding humanity, their presence has shaped the course of civilizations, prophecies, and spiritual warfare.

But not all Watchers remained faithful to their divine calling. Two hundred of them, led by the rebellious Samyaza, abandoned their posts, giving rise to one of the greatest celestial conflicts in history.

Created Beings with Both Eternal and Corporeal Forms

Unlike most angels who remain in a purely spiritual state, the Watchers are unique in that they can manifest physically at will. Their corporeal forms allow them to walk among humanity, appearing either as radiant celestial beings or as seemingly ordinary men. This ability to shift between human and angelic form set them apart as intermediaries between heaven and earth, making them essential in carrying out the Creator’s will.

In their true form, they are awe-inspiring—beings of immense stature, radiant light, and incomprehensible power. Yet, when they take human form, they seamlessly blend into society, watching, guiding, and, when necessary, intervening.

The Role of the Watchers in God’s Design

The Watchers were originally appointed as divine sentinels, overseeing the development of human civilization and ensuring that the Creator’s order was upheld. In the Book of Daniel (4:13-17), they are described as "holy ones" who execute God's decrees on earth. Their presence is woven throughout biblical and extra-biblical texts, revealing their role as both messengers and enforcers of divine law.

They were not meant to rule humanity but to watch over it—protecting, recording, and reporting on the actions of mankind. However, some of them grew restless, and their desire for power and earthly pleasures led to their fall.

The Rebellion: 200 Watchers Fall with Samyaza

Though the vast majority of Watchers remained loyal, a faction of 200, led by Samyaza, defied their purpose. The Book of Enoch recounts how these angels descended to Mount Hermon, forsaking their divine mission to take human wives and impart forbidden knowledge to mankind. Their union with mortal women resulted in the birth of the Nephilim—giant offspring who became tyrants, spreading violence and corruption across the earth.

Their teachings accelerated human advancement in ways that were never meant to be. They revealed the secrets of weapon-making, sorcery, astrology, and other hidden arts, leading humanity down a path of self-destruction. Their betrayal was so severe that it provoked divine judgment, culminating in the Great Flood.

Bound by chains in darkness, the Fallen Watchers now await their final judgment. Their legacy lingers in myths and legends, and their influence persists through the dark forces still at work in the world today.

The Eternal Watchers: Guardians of the Divine Order

While 200 fell, countless others remained steadfast in their mission. The loyal Watchers continue to serve as guardians of God’s creation, warriors against the forces of darkness, and keepers of divine wisdom. These Eternal Watchers ensure that the battle for humanity’s future is not fought alone.

In Sons of God – The Eternal Watchers, these divine beings play a crucial role in the struggle between light and darkness. They stand with the Guardians, guiding them as they face the enemies of righteousness—the Fallen and their human allies. Their presence is a testament to the ongoing spiritual warfare that rages beyond human perception.

The Ancient Gods: Watchers Turned to Myth

Throughout history, humanity has sought to understand the divine, often shaping truth into myth and legend. Many of the so-called "gods" of ancient civilizations—figures such as Freya, Thor, Athena, and Artemis—were not gods at all. In reality, they were, in my lore Watchers, celestial beings appointed by the Creator to observe, guide, and protect. Over time, their deeds, wisdom, and power were misunderstood, exaggerated, and transformed into the pantheons of old.

The Watchers never sought worship, nor did they claim divinity. However, as their stories were passed down through generations, embellished by human imagination and cultural interpretation, they became legends. The mortals they once aided began to revere them, crafting temples, rituals, and entire belief systems around them. What was once truth became myth, and what were once servants of the Creator became objects of false devotion.

How Some Watchers Became Gods

Acts of Power Misinterpreted as Divine Authority

When a Watcher intervened in human affairs—whether by imparting knowledge, aiding in battle, or revealing wisdom—their actions left a lasting impression. These encounters, however, were often misunderstood. A single act of intervention could be retold as divine favor, an answered prayer, or a miraculous sign from the heavens. Over centuries, a Watcher’s presence became synonymous with godhood in the minds of men.

Symbolism and Cultural Adaptation

Different civilizations interpreted the Watchers through their own cultural lenses. The fierce protector Thor, wielding lightning and unmatched strength, was a distorted reflection of a true celestial warrior. Artemis, the huntress and guardian of women, was once a Watcher devoted to the preservation of life. Athena, known for her wisdom and strategic prowess, was simply a Watcher guiding mortal leaders through the challenges of war and governance.

Temples and False Worship

The Watchers never desired worship, but humanity has a tendency to deify that which it does not fully understand. The influence of the Fallen only accelerated this misconception, twisting truth into false religion. As temples were built and sacrifices were offered, the stories of the Watchers—once accounts of celestial guardians—became legends of gods ruling over men.

The Watchers’ True Mission

Despite being worshipped by ancient civilizations, the Watchers never sought glory for themselves. Their mission was always to serve the Creator, guiding humanity toward righteousness and protecting them from the corruption of the Fallen. While history has enshrined them in myth, their true purpose remains unchanged. They are eternal sentinels, standing watch over creation, ensuring that darkness does not reign unchecked.

The truth, though lost to time for many, still lingers in fragments—whispered in ancient texts, hidden in the ruins of forgotten temples, and woven into the stories of those who still seek wisdom. They were never gods. They were, and always will be, the Eternal Watchers.

Scripture References for the Watchers

The Watchers as Holy Ones in Daniel

Daniel 4:13 (NASB)
"However, in the visions of my mind as I lay on my bed, I was looking, and behold, an angelic watcher, a holy one, descended from heaven."

Daniel 4:17 (NASB)
"This sentence is by the decree of the angelic watchers, and the decision is a command of the holy ones, in order that the living may know that the Most High is ruler over the realm of mankind, and He grants it to whomever He wishes, and sets over it the lowliest of people."

These verses establish the term Watchers (Aramaic: ʿîr), describing them as celestial beings who carry out God's decrees.

The Rebellion of the Watchers and the Nephilim

Though not found in the 66-book Protestant canon, the rebellion of the Watchers is detailed in 1 Enoch, an ancient Jewish text widely read in the Second Temple period and referenced in Jude 1:14-15. This passage speaks of the 200 rebellious Watchers led by Samyaza. Their sin involved corrupting humanity, taking human wives, and fathering the Nephilim.

Genesis 6:1-2 (NASB)
"Now it came about, when mankind began to multiply on the face of the land, and daughters were born to them, that the sons of God saw that the daughters of mankind were beautiful, and they took wives for themselves, whomever they chose."

Genesis 6:4 (NASB)
"The Nephilim were on the earth in those days, and also afterward, when the sons of God came in to the daughters of mankind, and they bore children to them. Those were the mighty men who were of old, men of renown."

Here, the sons of God (Hebrew: benei ha’elohim) are widely interpreted in ancient Jewish tradition and some Christian thought as the Watchers—angels who took human wives and fathered giants.

The Watchers Who Fell and Their Judgment

Jude 1:6 (NASB)
"And angels who did not keep their own domain but abandoned their proper dwelling place, these He has kept in eternal restraints under darkness for the judgment of the great day."

This passage refers to the fallen Watchers, emphasizing their punishment. Their abandonment of their "proper dwelling place" aligns with the Book of Enoch, which states that these angels descended to corrupt mankind.

2 Peter 2:4 (NASB)
"For if God did not spare angels when they sinned, but cast them into hell and committed them to pits of darkness, held for judgment;"

The Greek word translated as hell here is Tartarus, a term used in Greek mythology for the deepest abyss of the underworld, reinforcing the idea that the rebellious Watchers were bound in a dark prison awaiting final judgment.

The Authority of the Faithful Watchers

While some Watchers fell, others remained faithful. They continue to serve as messengers and enforcers of God's will.

Psalm 103:20 (NASB)
"Bless the Lord, you His angels, mighty in strength, who perform His word, obeying the voice of His word!"

Hebrews 1:14 (NASB)
"Are they not all ministering spirits sent out to provide service for the sake of those who will inherit salvation?"

This confirms that the loyal Watchers are still active, executing God's commands and assisting those who follow His path.

The Final Judgment of the Watchers and the Restoration of Order

Revelation 12:7-9 (NASB)
"And there was war in heaven, Michael and his angels waging war with the dragon. The dragon and his angels waged war, and they did not prevail, and there was no longer a place found for them in heaven. And the great dragon was thrown down, the serpent of old who is called the devil and Satan, who deceives the whole world; he was thrown down to the earth, and his angels were thrown down with him."

Though this passage primarily describes Satan's fall, it echoes the fate of the fallen Watchers—cast out of heaven and awaiting their final judgment.

Conclusion

The Watchers are a powerful and mysterious class of angels, some of whom remained faithful to their divine calling, while others, led by Samyaza, fell into rebellion. Their story, woven through both Scripture and ancient Jewish texts, reveals the ongoing spiritual battle between light and darkness. While some are bound in chains awaiting judgment, the loyal Watchers continue to serve as guardians and enforcers of God’s will.
